WHEREAS all Albertans deserve to live without fear and the experience of violence, including gender-based violence; and

WHEREAS female genital mutilation is an issue in more than 30 countries; and

WHEREAS female genital mutilation is recognized by the United Nations and other world bodies as child abuse and an abuse of a girl’s fundamental human rights; and

WHEREAS the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals call for the elimination of female genital mutilation by 2030; and

WHEREAS the Government of Alberta recognizes and supports the immense courage of survivors who have experienced female genital mutilation; and

WHEREAS the Government of Alberta, along with many nations in the international community, recognizes the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation; and

WHEREAS the Government of Alberta seeks to raise awareness of female genital mutilation as a criminal act of gender-based violence and to acknowledge the commitment of Albertans involved in eradicating this unacceptable practice;

THEREFORE the Lieutenant Governor in Council orders that a Proclamation issue proclaiming February 6th of each year as the Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation in Alberta.
